Editorial from article in Country Walking Magazine - date 2005
Donnette: “We used to live just outside Bath. I was the chief executive of a research company and Ed was the senior law partner. He was under constant pressure and had to work long hours while I was constantly travelling up and down the country and spend half my life on the motorway. Four years ago, we decided that there was more to life than work. We still wanted to communicate with people and we loved Cornwall, so we decided it would be the perfect place to set up a walking business. We wanted to offer friendly holidays and we chose the name ‘Laidback Trailblazers’ to sum up what we wanted to achieve. We want people to have time to look at interesting sites, take the odd photo and not have to rush to get to the end . We feel so much fitter since we moved and more connected to nature. Our 18-year old dog is living proof that walking is good to you. He used to lead a fairly sedetary life, but now he can walk 12 miles a day and he looks like a younster again.
Ed: “I seemed to be wasting my life away, working longer and longer hours and not getting anywhere, except closer to a wooden box. We decided we had to change our lifestyle. Just before we made the move we got married in Penzance. Instead of traditional wedding clothes, we wore full walking gear and supped on champagne and pasties. A walking business made perfect sense for us. Still, it was a big decision and it hasn’t always been easy. When guests are here, we’re on the go from seven in the morning to 10 at night. But the pleasure of walking and being in the fresh air more than compensates for the long hours It’s such a lovely way to live. People often ask me whether I regret giving up the law. I tell them I’ve never looked back”
